A Beginner’s Guide to Ordering a Bespoke Birthday Cake

Ordering a custom birthday cake for the first time can feel daunting. How much time do you need? What questions will the baker ask? What is realistic for your budget? Here is everything we wish every customer knew before reaching out.

Start With Time

The single biggest factor in getting the cake you want is lead time. For a fully bespoke design, we recommend reaching out at least 7 days in advance — 14 days is better. This gives us time for a flavour consultation, design sketching, and sourcing any special ingredients.

Think About the Eater, Not the Photo

Instagram has trained us to choose cakes for how they look. But the best birthday cakes are chosen for the person eating them. Does the birthday person love chocolate? Do they have a favourite spice or fruit? Are they sentimental about a flavour from childhood?

The most memorable cake I ever made was a simple lemon-poppyseed loaf for a grandmother whose own mother used to bake one every birthday. Sometimes the best design is no design.

Be Honest About Budget

A good baker will work with almost any budget if you are upfront. Our cakes start at £85 for a three-tier celebration cake and rise based on size, complexity, and any premium ingredients you choose. Tell us your number and we will design something beautiful within it.

Trust the Process

Once we agree on a design, leave the rest to us. We will send a sketch for approval and update you on delivery timing. The cake will arrive in our signature sage box, ready to be the heart of the day.
